I have tried several commercial rubs since I got my 009 CS. My wife complains that they are all to
spicy. Can someone suggest a neutral rub recipe if such a creature exists.

Thanks for any help

salt and pepper.. with garlic or with onion powder unless she doesn't like those. Or just marinate in apple juice/vinegar

Kathy is right. Nothhing wrong with staying with the basics! Try using whatever spices your wife likes. Shoot, I imagine you coud even rub half the butt the way you like it and half with salt & pepper ar whatever she wants. Kinda like "his & hers" butts! Always good to keep the Mrs. happy Big Grin

Kathy,

You can edit your own posts so you don't have to repost each time. Just click on the image that looks like a notepad with pencil.

Fish,

I'm not sure what a "neutral" rub is. You'll just have to experiment with rubs. Look at the ingredients and the colors and eliminate the flavors you don't like. Stay away from the spicey ingredients and use less rub.

Nope. It's at the top of your post next to the quotation marks.

There are so many rub recipes on the Web or in cookbooks. Find one that you like and reduce or omit the cayenne pepper.

If you're looking for recipe suggestions, you can search the archives and find plenty. I've never bought a store-bought rub and I don't ever intend to.

I use this, it's not spicy, but adds flavor!! My wife and kids also do not like their BBQ spicy.

Another Rub:#1 I use this on my brisket
Inject brisket with beef brotha lot
5- tablespoons dark brown sugar
4- tablespoons paprika
1- tablespoon rosemary
4- teaspoons onion powder
4- teaspoons garlic powder
4- teaspoons dry mustard
3- teaspoons dried sweet basil
2- teaspoons ground bay leaves (If you can't find ground use whole)
1- teaspoons ground coriander
1- teaspoons ground savory
1- teaspoons dried thyme
1- teaspoons ground black pepper
1- teaspoons white pepper
- teaspoon ground cumin
Salt, to taste
Directions:

Place all ingredients into a food processor and blend. If you use whole bay leaves blend until leaves are pulverized.
Rub meat and cover with saran wrap.
Marinade over night in fridge. Allow meat come to room temperature and place in smoker.

I use this rub on brisket and ribs.
