Hi,
I have a question... I was wondering if/ when Cookshack will come out with a small unit simular to the new FEC smokers that have the digital meat themometer with probe that will work with the SM 008 Smokette?? I love my smoker but I have a hard time cooking my meat without undercooking or overcooking my products. I have to keep opening the door to check it, which delays my cooking times. Is there any way that you can take a retail digital meat themometer and put it through the vent and inside the meat to get an accurate internal temperature?? Has this been tried?? I have already tried one by putting the wire out the door, but when the door is latched it crimps the wire which makes it a one time use only. That is an expensive way when it costs around $20-$25 for one.

Welcome to the Forum Buttercup.

We have been dropping the probe of a digital therm for years. It works great! Absolutely no need to open the door (right GLH...?). And no need for over/under cooked meat!

You ought to hang out here at the forum more often!

Welcome aboard!

Thank you Wheelz, for the input, going to go buy another one tomorrow. I plan on being here more often. I just had not signed on yet. I am still learning and experimenting with my smoker. I LOVE IT!!!! I have tried many different kinds, they were too messy or just not handy to cook with. Now I have found the smoker that I have been looking for. I plan on wearing it out, then looking for another one. I have got my Uncle hooked on it now and he bought him one, but not this kind, a cheaper model. I am looking forward to experimenting more with it a lot this spring and summer.

The last few thermometers that I've bought have a "L" shaped probe and a "L" shaped plug that makes it impossible to fit either end thru the vent hole. Instead of bending the probe end I've been running the wire out the door but at the upper or lower corner on the latch side. I haven't ruined one yet.

ninetyproof,

If you take the end of the probe that goes into the meat you can straighten, bend ,it out alittle so it WILL go down the vent hole. It's the only way to go ..

Sorry, if it ain't smoked it ain't BBQ !!

All of the probes I have (about 4 or 5 different kinds) are L shaped but they all will fit down the vent of an 008 or 055 without bending. Have you tried it?

I too have a smokette and an "L" shaped probe. I have not had to straighten it all. It slips right through the vent hole.

I don't have any trouble with "L" shaped probes either. But, if I did I would open the smoker door and run the opposite end up thru the vent hole. Might want to wrap the plug with foil or plastic wrap to keep grease/oil from getting on it. Just FYI... Big Grin

But... but.. none of my L shaped probes except maybe one would allow that. They all have a right angle 'plug' on them and that makes them too wide to fit up thru the vent. Only a straight plug will do that and not many probes have straight plugs.

You can get thermometers that are cheaper than that, that will go down threw the vent. I got mine at Wal-Mart and I think it was around $12 to $15 and have no problem with it giong threw the vent. It's a Sunbeam and the probe does not have a sharp 90 degree bend it has what I would call a sweeping 90 degree bend.

That Sunbeam is actually a very good thermometer. I have one that has lasted for years through rain, cold, and heat.
