Never actually "sterilized" a probe. Being a probe, it might not react unfavorably to high temperature water. I'd be careful to avoid getting water inside the probe though. Others have commented on dead probes from the same. After wiping off the gook (that's a real word. Look it up.), you might want to dip it, just short of the wire inlet, in hot water with some sort of detergent in it.
I like the alcohol idea but I'd only do that after I removed as much of the other stuff as possible.
