Okay, so I've suffered for years with Kidney Stones (don't ask about the Hospital visit).

NOW I find out he wants me to restrict my "Oxalates".

What are they? I know now. Done lots of studying and received my "list" of ok stuff to eat and not okay stuff to eat.

Long story short, they are in my most favorite BBQ item (and probably the cause of my KS)

BAKED BEANS Well actually all dried beans (looks like Pinto also)

They're now on my don't eat list. Well, I'm going out swinging, I'm not gonna remove them. Nope, Sorry, Won't do it. I'm just gonna have to restrict my eating of them. Guess instead of eating them routinely, I'll have to savor them like a good steak when I do eat them.

Are you SERIOUS?

BBQ without BEANS...

Oh, and Pecan Pie is on that list too.

And Draft beer.

Just SHOOT ME NOW...

Frowner

but I'll watch myself, drink my water and be happy to not eat the stuff I don't want to eat anyway (spinach, beets, are fruits and vegetables)...

I'm 55, in great health (treadmill 6 days a week) and if I pass away, just remember me that I loved my BBQ. Maybe they'll put a pot of beans and a pecan pie on my headstone.

But I'll have a smile on my face. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Smokin,

Sorry to hear about the restrictions, but hopefully there will be less attacks with Kidney Stones. Take care as I've learned more in a few months reading your and other's advice and 101's than I would have ever learned without finding this forum.

Best of luck and as my wife keeps telling me, "in moderation".....Jer
I googled it and it came up with this and more:

Many metal ions form insoluble precipitates with oxalate, a prominent example being calcium oxalate, the primary constituent of the most common kind of kidney stones.

A friend of mine passed two stones and it wasn't pleasant. Sorry to hear about your condition.

I can't do dairy products...ties my guts in knots and I miss my ice cream Frowner
I can attest to the fact that kidney stones are no fun, considering multiple emergency rooms visits and morphine to curb the pain. That was at a time in my life that I was working very long hours and probably not maintaining the best balance in diet. The one time that a stone was actually captured and examined resulted in the advice to reduce tea consumption. The one thing that seems consistent advice is to increase fluid intake. In studies, beer and wine have been found to significantly decrease the risk of stone formation. For me I feel it was also the stress of the long hours that contributed greatly as well. You'll do well to study 'kidney stone myths' as well and cause and treatment. If you consume antacids there are those to suggest that you should stop. Unfortunately there isn't a panacea. Just try to achieve a balanced diet and exercise, and de-stress.
Oh Oh. Lighten up on the salt. It's common to all types of stones. Plenty of liquids. But you probably already know this.

When my rubs call for salt, I cut it in half. Don't put any on my food except for the rare consumption of popcorn or french fries. I hate to bring this up again, but what about brining?

You mentioned draft beer. Is nondraft OK? Time to become a connoisseur of wine?

Hang in there. A few changes aren't all that bad given the consequences. At least you can still enjoy the bulk of your barbecueing.
My guy put me on the lemonade or lime recently. This isn't new to me, I've been dealing with KS for years. I know all the websites, myths, issues, etc. Trust me I've tried most of them.

FINALLY got to a Doctor that seemed to know what was going on.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone. You should ask me about the 8mm baby kydney stone I passed in the hospital and the Doctors and nurses (who have given birth) explain that was the biggest they'd seen someone pass. And Morphine wasn't strong enough, they gave me something else.

And I'm still eating my beans and pecan pie.
Might I suggest a little/lot of tequila with that lime and lemonade. It will surly dissolve any stone and even if that doesn't happen, it will double as a pain killer...good stuff!

Yep, it would be hard for me to give up the pecan pie. Hang in there Smokin', moderation has always been the answer to health problems.
Don't do the beans if you can't pass the stones ...

8 mm? You should have that sucker on a chain around your neck, like a badge of honor (but not a gemstone). It hurts just thinking about it. You may not want it staring back at you whenever you look in the mirror.

I have occasional problems with gout, so I avoid shellfish, turkey and organ meat. I've been tempted to smoke a turkey for Thanksgiving the past few years, though I doubt the rest of the family would like it. There's a particular dish made with cow's tongue (lengua) I used to enjoy, but no more. I'm imbibing sour cherry juice every morning. It's not so sour when you water it down.

How did you know that already is my drink of choice. That way, when I get pains, I can still eat my BBQ.

(see it's still a BBQ thread)

AMEN, Cal, and Smokin, we need to get together and have us a Tequila/Mezcal party. Maybe have a little something going in the smoker to make like were doing something important. Big Grin And if no won had any KS problems we could say we found the cure!! At least at that particular moment of time.
You got a KS 101 for that?

In all seriousness, I wish you all the best. I feel for you.

I only had KS once and I was screaming and crying on the emergency room floor when they put me inline to process paper work and admin stuff. I did not know KS were and I thought I was on deaths doorstep.

I was a big baby.
