I have read enough to know I need one of these so I dont have to open the door of the smoker to check the meat temp. I do have a few questions.
1) On my ofset smoker do I need to drill a hole in it to run the probe & wire through.

2) What do you do if you wrap the meat in tinfoil, does the foil give you a false reading.

3) What kind and what model should I get and where can I purchase one. Big Grin

I like whatever is on sale.
An off/on switch is kinda nice for batteries.

Just close the door of your cooker on the wire and set the reader unit outside.

The tip of the probe is reading internal temp in the meat,so foil doesn't matter.

Try Lowe's,Target,Walmart,Home Depot,Bedbath&beyond,Kmart,etc.

All else fails you can find deals on amazon.com.
Sounds like you guys get pretty serious about your BBQ, thats great. I am still an ameture but love this new hobby. Believe it or not so far have cooked some good stuff.
My main problem is guessing when its done but going to solve that tonight.. Radio Shack has a remote digital BBQ thermometer so I will be able to check the meat temp with out opening up my smoker. Going to order a good quality one for reading the temp at the meat level since this one only reads up to 199. Its reasonbly priced ($39.95) and I can use it for the 4th weekend. I believe ponder is the kind I want to get.

I have seen several good sugestions for the cable and door was wondering about these two

down the smokestack or up from the bottom through the hole that the juices go out or even drill a seperate hole in the bottom?

which would you do ? will the heat from the smokestack or grill itself harm the cable?

Thanks guys for your help, look forward to getting good nuf to invite company over for a BBQ. I am taking the chicken way out for Sat the 5th, grilling pork chops for a few friends. The 4th and 6th I plan on smokin something. (Have to work half a day on the 5th)
The thing that makes this forum great is that for the most part, we all want to help the next new member and the old members achieve Q'in success.

If you try to listen well, do a few searches and figure out how to modify some of the stuff for you individual cooker, then you'll be the hit of the neighborhood.

As for the probe.

Try to minimze any impact on the unit, you might just do what Tom says, just feed it in and close the lid. Long term, cut a hole in the side, but make it small so weather won't get in and heat won't get out.
