During the break-in I noticed the top of my AQ got hot. It was hot enough I could not hold my hand on it. The affected heat area was about 6 inches across the top front of the smoker. There was another area on the top left hand front corner that extends toward the rear about 10 inches in depth and 9 inches wide. Maybe I have a built in hot plate.

I just got my Amerique moving up from the SM 25) which has been great, and on my first seasoning smoke today, experienced the same issue. Temp up to 280, then down to 233--worried that I may have a problem--but seems like others have mentioned this. I wish the instruction booklet that comes with it would mention this. Hopefully mine will be okay.
