Dear Friends.

Just a note to say that I made it to Qatar for my one-year deployment. I sure miss my FEC and can almost smell the smoke. I'm gonna have my son mail me a hand full of pellets so I can light one once in a while and get the aroma of something besides dust. My email address in country is william.j.wehlage@swa.army.mil.

Some of you mentioned mailing jerky and other items after I arrived for the Soldiers. Those who wish to mail Jerky or anything else you think will make it this far, can send it to

We can certainly utilize all you send, the Troops would love it.

Anyway, I really value your friendships and your prayers while half-a-world away.

Chaplain....

Welcome to Qatar. I assume you're in Doha, or nearby. Not a bad deployment at all. Once you figure out how to cope with the scorching summer heat and accompanying dust/sand storms, it should be a good stay.

My few attempts with jerky have produced some pretty ragged results so I'll leave that to the experts. If you will provide some suggestions for BBQ items that are desirable, shippable, and allowable in the country, it would be helpful.

Thanks.
cal, please count me in. I will make jerky and almonds as well. I think about a weeks notice before shipping should give most of us enough time to make a decent amount of stuff!

C. Bill, thanks for the opportunity to make yours and your guys and gals lives a little better even if it's only for a very short time while they enjoy our treats.
Folks, your responses are encouraging. Jerky and almonds and any other shelf-stable items sound great. I have normal 'care packages' with confort items coming thru 'any soldier' channels, so probally not a lot of need for them. I'm trying to crack the military funding code for BBQs and such here at the chapel. Contractors do the cooking here, so they don't want anyone else drawing rations from the chowhall, a job security thing I guess which is desquised as 'food safety'. They do sell frozen meat at the PX, (all beef) But it is kinda expensive, but has a OK variety.

Thanks for the offer, but Please don't send any cuban cigars, they are forbidden due to the 'rules' here for deployed Soldiers. We have nearly 3K personnel running around, so what you send will not go to waste.
Dear Folks. Just writing to say, I'm ready for any jerky you might send my way. I have not received any yet, so If you've sent some, let me know in PM and I'll get on the the NCOs at the Postal for 'over sensoring' the mail. Anyway, If you want to send some, I know it would be a world of blessing to our folks. My address remains,

Sorry Chaplain!,

Been doing the summer thing and sorta forgot. I see that RD has some inside round on sale. It should work okay,I think?

Will get up there next weekend and see if I can't get some made up...your problem now, how do you distribute our shipment to 3000 folks???? You can think on that one!

Hope all has went well and the family hasn't sold your FEC?

I'll start working on mine as well. May throw in a tee shirt from my on line BBQ company if you let me know what size and send back a photo. Be kinda of neat to see the shirt worn over there. Be safe.

Chaplain Bill,

Please pm me with other "allowable" items we can send with the jerky packages. I'm really looking forward to loading up the 120 and making a bunch of jerky for all of you in the line of fire or away from home.

How about making that list available to all? And what would the service men and women want other than what we might make in our smokers?
Folks, I'll be watching for packages. As far as what else to send, I think we have plenty of hygene/everything else items coming in thru Any Soldier channels. We could use some coffee creamer, as it is Very Expensive at the PX, and not really avaliable elseware. Also, maybe some good cookies or any other snack items you think will make it this far.

Right about the pork, don't send any pork products. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. Blessings, CHB
