Hey Papa.. before I forget it.. I've emailed you a few times about your dog.. did ja get them?

I've had whale a number of times but it was BBQ'd.. not smoked. This was about 40 years ago when it was still legal to hunt whale. I worked at the Univ of Calif in Berkeley as a research asst. We'd collect the eyes and ears for the students to dissect. The guys cutting up the whales always asked us if we wanted some.. and they'd cut us off about a 25# block.. Before I had any, I thought it would taste fishy.. but.. what a surprise when it tasted as good as any prime rib I've ever had. There was NO fat in the meat.
Ostrich, Kangaroo, Alligator, Insects (they're better grilled) Various endangered species (that I can't mention)

Most of my unusual smokes didn't have to do with WHAT I smoked, but what I smoked on. Favorite was building a smoker in Australia to do ribs on. They'd never had American Ribs nor Beans, so I worked with the local Air Force Base Metal shop (I was stationed there) and we built a smoker. I left it and the instructions when I came back to the US after two years. Hope they didn't lose the instructions. Similar stories from other countries I went to that didn't have smokers. Made more than my share of 50 gal drum offset smokers.

Hey Papa, are you gonna tell us what it tasted like ??

After Smokenque's description I'm thinking about switching from fly fishing for the ever elusive trout :-)
It tasted like normal smoked fish. It was black in color. I expected it to be oily like eel, but it was on the dry side. I'll send SmokinOkie a photo to post. That had smoked eel, but I can get that in Germany.

SmokenQue, I got your e-mail about wood carvings. If you want to make a wood carving of my dog, let me know.
