So I just took the class to be a KCBS CBJ. Great class, very informative. But one thing that I never really thought about before the class. If you're a judge, you can get really fat!

Think about it, you're judging four categories for six teams. If you only eat 1oz. from each entry, you're eating 1 1/2lbs. of meat by the time you are done.

Was told that most teams cook chicken thighs, so you're getting six chicken thighs, six ribs (1/2 a slab), six portions of pork, might be pulled, might be sliced, might be chunked. But if you're presented multiple types, you're supposed to sample all of them. And finally, six slices of brisket and maybe burnt ends.

That's easily 4-5lbs. of meat. And I'm trying to loose weight.... Frowner

My first go around as a CBJ was a few years ago. One of the guys at my table was devouring half of what he had on the mat. The rest of it went into a gallon sized freezer bag.

It was a very hot afternoon, upper 90's and we were under a tent with drop down sides...musta been 105 in there. After the brisket judging he toted away about 4 lbs of food. I pitty the fool who was on the other end of that feed-bag. Frowner

Yeah, you just might discover that that CS and Smokin' have made you a better cook than most samples you taste...just a thought!

Have fun and watch out, it can be a slippery slope...just remember that 15000 dollars later....

When I judge comps I usually take a cooler with ice in it and some plastic sandwich bags for the leftovers. It would be a pity to waste that wonderful (in most cases) Q.

FYI-If you judge a Sam's Club comp you are not allowed to take any Q home with you.

There is an old saying about sampling foods: taste everything, but eat nothing. A judge doesn't need a mouthful of Q to arrive at an opinion.

That said, sometimes a rib comes along that must be entirely consumed it is soooooo good ;-}
