Last week ,on our way to judge the Charleston,SC barbecue cookoff,we stopped at a new Q joint in the suburbs on the south side of Savannah, Coffee Bluff Barbecue.
I'll make the standard disclaimer that I have no interest in any of these places and had never met the operators.
We stopped at three other Q joints on the trip up I-95.
I had never been there, but can easily say it was far superior to the well known Savannah places I have visited in past years.
Mike and Crystal are long time restaurant people and know how to run a restaurant.
They showed us great hospitality for the afternoon and allowed us to sample most of what they served.
It was all good and we left stuffed.
The pork sandwich was 1/2 lb. of good lean smoked pork ,with a 1/2 lb. side of your choice.
The dinners contain 1/2 lb. of lean smoked meat, two 1/2 lb. sides and Texas toast.
They use a good slab of ribs, trimmed to St. Louis style so you don't get all the waste.
They offer three sauces, mild and spicey red and a mustard based-all naturally on the side.
They cook with a blend of apple and mesquite.
We especially liked the Brunswick stew and the steak fries, made from huge smoke cooked baking potatoes with a cajun like seasoning.
They also have a huge smoked baking potato, hollowed out and stuffed with 1/2 lb. of pork, cheese, etc.
I can't believe the portions at the price, but they apparently have a low facility cost and all family labor.
It was real easy to order more than most can comfortably eat at a meal.
