Ok guys I need help and you are the only ones I trust.
My gas grill crapped out on me and I need to replace it.

I'll start by saying I'm a proud Amerique owner and wouldn't trade it for anything.

My dilema is do I buy a new gas grill or a pellet grill?

I've found myself not having enough room in the Amerique only twice in the time I've owned it. So this would be for grilling only --burgers steak, chicken etc.

I am aware of the Fast Eddy but can not afford it--If I could I wouldn't be making this post.

Looking for any advice or input from folks who own both or have cooked on both.

Yes. We have a FEC100, Treager 070 and a Weber Preformer.
For a grill, I use the Weber because I prefer the taste of the charcoal more than the Treager Pellets. Now, my wife Jan, uses the Treager because it is easy.
I believe the Weber is a lot less expensive than the Treager.
Also, if not a CS, there are other models of Pellets out there that are good also, so check'm out.
Cookshack is about to launch the new PG500 direct grill/indirect smoker for about $1,600. It might fill the niche as a high heat direct grill + provide you additional indirect smoking capacity, added to your AQ.

I've had a Traeger Lil Tex for 6 years and can tell you it doesn't get hot enough to effectively grill steaks. It does do a decent job on chicken, ribs and can also do larger meats such as butts and briskets.

There are other hi heat pellet grills on the market but I don't feel comfortable mentioning them on the CS forum.
I also have the AmeriQue, and love it.

For a grill, I went gas for ease of operation and quickness, and went with the Weber-Summit S-670. Expensive but worth every penny.

Six burners plus 2 middle infareds and a rotesire infared. Can get up to some serious temp. Have done pizzas in it at 700* plus!
I once had an electric cookshack and a HOT burning pellet grill and was pretty happy with the combination. I've since replaced them with a FEC100 and gasser and an very happy.

I'd say that if you do buy a pellet grill you should be sure that it will get hot enough to properly grill.

That said ask yourself why did you have a gas grill in the first place.

If the answer was speed and convenience or ease of use, you should be aware that a pellet grill will take more time to get hot, require pellets, require more time cleaning and more overall maintenance, but will produce a tastier product.
The FEPG is very versitle, you can smoke and grill and it does an awesome job of that. But the right side is indirect, but it will be cooking at whatever temp it is set at and it will add a lot of flavor because of the smoke. I do pizza's all the time in the FEPG. Put the stone in, crank it up to 500 and wait until the stone is hot.

The left side is the direct side and check out the dimensions of that because you need to ask how many steaks you'll be cooking, burners, etc.

If it's for grilling only, I hate to say it but you won't be happy with the FEPG without thinking about what this unit does and doesn't do. It's a direct grill and indirect grill, but most users of it want more direct grilling area.

Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome grill. But you have to adjust your technique a little. Cook direct, finish on the indirect. Start on the indirect side, smoke it, then finish it on the direct side.

So it's really back to you, what exactly, and how much are you wanting to cook.

Now, it's probably out of your range, but the family LOVES the Charbroiler. Not sure what the 12" costs, we have the 36". Charts steaks like the professional unit it is.
Thanks guys for all the replies. After a allot of thought and several days of surfing the net I am going to hold out for the PG500. My only concern is the direct side size. I think I'm going to keep my gasser and rebuild it for the times I'll need it-- partys and gatherings. Otherwise I feel the direct side will be fine for my family of 4. I emailed Eddy to be added to the list and recieved an email back saying I will be contacted by someone from Cookshack.

Thanks again
Tim
