Cap for exhaust

For some time now I've been putting a baggie, secured with a rubber band, over my exhaust to keep wind, rain and snow out of my FEC.

I'm tired of rotting rubber bands and missing baggies...........

Dose anyone have any better solutions or do you leave your exhaust open?

Are you talking while it's running or between smokes?

I know a lot of people just buy a vent cap of the same size. Problem would be you'd have to order one online, not many stores carry. I found mine a HD years ago.

There are a couple of ideas here about them.

Someone will speak up with some help.

Check Home Depot/Lowes for a 5" 90 degree elbow extension. I've got mine pointed down and it keeps the elements out while not disturbing the needed air outflow. Insert the crimped end into your vent and you're good to go.

I found a small bucket, the kind some people use for candles, it just fits inside the exhaust port, then when I am cooking, I lean a piece of plywood up against the one end of the bucket while the other end is against the smoker. The angle of lean puts enough wieght on the bucket to keep it in place,and the plywood keeps the wind from blowing into the smoker. A piece of metal would be safer, for a non combustible

I leave mine open rain, sleet or snow without any problems. If the wind blows directly into the vent I do move the vent out of the direct wind and works perfectly.

Like route66 says.We leave them open at home,cookoffs,24/7.
Extreme wind,we might angle it so the wind is not direct into the vent.
We do it on all the different models of FECs we work with.

Hope this helps a little.

I have a 5 inch 90 depress elbow with a vented cap...works well and no wind problems. did this primarily to keep the sparrows out.

I'm looking for something to keep the elements out when not in use. I think I'll try a nerf football, or maybe a little larger diameter round foam ball. I'll just have to remember to take it out, or it'll launch across the yard when I fire it up

Maybe even a bucket that would fit inside the exhaust vent... the kind with tapered sides so it would work like a cork sealing the exhaust vent keeping all the critters out.
