Well it's getting to the point where my Q is in demand, and folks are asking me to do what arguably could be called catering. For example I did ribs for a friend's dad's 60th and now their church would like me to cater a small event. I also have several South Africans asking me for a weekly supply of biltong.

Now I'm not wanting to get in this for the money so I will not be charging more than what the food costs and a little for beer and suffering, but I am concerned about what liability I might incur doing this sort of thing. Should I be setting myself up as a catering outfit of some sort and/or have a simple legal disclaimer to insulate myself from a potential suit (God forbid)? What about taxes on the 'income' if I start depositing weekly checks for biltong?

Which way should I do this? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

robbi,
this is what we did. we set up as a chapter s corporation. since my wife can take two nickels and squeeze a quarter fron them she is "front of the house" and i work for her. since it is a corporation the suit is against it not us. we have gotten liability insurance in case of a law suit and our family lawyer has agreed to represent us in case of problems. no way would we leave oursevels exposed by not being a corporation and the cost in florida was only about a grand.
hope this helps and since you are in cali i would sure protect my family!!!!!
robbi,
one other thing. i would suggest a book called "successful catering" by bernard splaver. the ISBN number is 0-442-23980-7 and was published by van nordstrand reinhold 1991.
