Having just moved, I'm finding out how much fun dealing with the health department can be all over again. Even though I only moved about 70 miles and am still in the same state, with the same rules, the folks here seem to have a whole different take on things versus the county I just came from.

I am posting this because I think it is funny. Those of you owning restaurants might see the humor too.

This is an automated ice dispenser that I frequent. Good ice, cheap, and open 24/7. There are no employees, and any customers can drive right up to the machine as it sits in the middle of a large parking lot. You can see the nose of my car in this picture. The funny thing is, notice the designated handicap parking with sign(2 spaces), mandated by law but located further away than any customer would need to park. On the back side, there is a unisex bathroom that remains locked all the time, no doubt because there are no employees or sit down customers. See, under NC law, this is considered a restaurant.

There are several drive-thru only restaurants in the area that even though they have NO customer parking, being strictly a drive-thru only business, they still have to have handicap parking. Makes no sense.

Nothing against handicapped people, its just that the required signage and markings cost about $300 per space, all at an establishment where it means nothing.

sounds like ADA gone amuck; so why not a HC ramp instead of the stair since the door in your image is most likely the only one. Is there HC access to the toilet as it looks like this is a prefab unit and the floor would be about 2 feet above the parking level. Not to mention that the door hardware, clearance and stair rail do not meet ADA code; and neither does the stair and landing either most likely.

The door you see is just access to the inner workings of the unit. The restroom door has a ramp and railings, but like I said, it's never open for use. Just there to satisfy a bureaucrats strange understanding of the law. There are several of these machines around town, but this is the only one with a restroom. And some don't have the handicap parking. Strange how rules change from place to place.
