In the past two smoking sessions I've opened my FEC-100 to find the burner full of wood/ash, with wood backing all the way up the ramp to the auger. The wood on the ramp is half-burned since the fire carried up out of the burner.

I'm wondering what is happening as this has never been a problem before. I am using a new wood pellet type (the previous brand stopped being available.) Do you think maybe it is causing too much ash?

Nope, sounds like your fire went out. I've never seen so much ash created it could put out a fire that was already going unless the fan quit.

Do you clean it before each use?

Do you have an exhaust on it?

I watch mine until it's lit and going for sure. IF it goes out after that, then its usually from a draft problem or a fan problem. Had to tell.
It's either:
1.FIREPOT (cast iron is designed different than SS) as Nordy stated.
2.BACKPRESSURE (either draft into unit causing smoke buildup and putting fire out or improper vent pipe ie. too long)
3.FAN MALFUNCTION (not cycling as it should)

I have found that even after vaccuming out the firepot before every cook on my FEC100 with a SS firepot.there is still a buildup of fines in the chamber inside the firepot channel in which the fan uses as a duct.

I stumbled on this this week because I took the two screws out to remove it to look around and was suprised that there was around at least 1/2 a cup of particle in that duct. It actually didn't look like ashes but the dust reside of pellets.

I've been using my FEC for a year this month so I don't think this is a large accumulation but you would have to have a need to look there to find it built up.

Just and FYI.

Vacuuming is surely not sufficient for cleaning. You need to use good cleaning solution for proper results

I've had my FE1000 for 2 years and FEC100 for almost 3 and have never done more to the firepot than vacuum it out. Knock on wood, no problems with either. I do knock the chunks off the inside walls of the 100 with a plastic paint scraper from time to time and have degreased the bottom a few times. That is all.
