Just curious if there is any consensus out there as to a preference of blended pellets or 100% non-blended pellets. I've read where many people have said that there is a lighter smoke to the FEC 100s. Do the 100% nonblended (i.e. hickory, mesquite, oak, pecan, apple, cherry) impart too strong a flavor or is there a tradeoff between smoke flavor in non-blended and BTU's in the blended.

What's your preference?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I am waiting delivery of my FEC 100 (around mid January) so I can't compare yet.

I had both my 100's delivered with mesquite instead of hickory, and I bought a pallet of half oak and half pecan from Fast Eddy. I have been cooking with a blend of 40% oak, 40% pecan and 20% mesquite, and I use it on everything I smoke. The problem is going to be when I run out of mesquite. I'm either going to have to change the blend or pay an arm and leg for more mesquite.
Candy Sue,

I just purchased a 100 lbs of BBQ'rs Delight pellets in various flavors. I'm waiting for the delivery of my FEC 100 to try them out.

I noticed that there are a lot of different flavors available (orange, Jack Daniels, etc) in the single use pouches for backyard grillers.
Are all of these flavors available for purchase in 10 or 20 lb bags? Just curious because I didn't see them listed in the large bags.
No, only 8 flavors (so far) in pellet grill fuel. What I do with the 100% flavors, is make my own blend 50/50 with oak. 1/2 a one pound bag and half a pound of oak mixed at the start of the cook (when most smoke flavor is soaked up by food). Then finish the cook with straight oak.

Works good.

Rainman, Did you ever find a source for pellets??
There is a mill in Columbia that acutally MAKES them. If purchase 10 bags+ can get 20# bag for $4.49 each.

Let me know and I will give you more detailed info if you want it.
Not sure if this place (a mill) ships or not. But for the people in the NW, it is in Columbia City on Hwy 30.

Rainman, it is right in YOUR back yard!! I bet you could ALMOST walk over to it. Although might be a bit heavy carry all the bags of pellets home Wink

The place is called: West Oregon Wood Products
P.O. Box 249 Columbia City, Ore. 97018

PH: 800-966-5654

They make Alder, Hickory, Misquite & Apple pellets.

For the ones that want to drive there...When you get to the ONLY traffic light in CC, turn and go ACROSS the tracks and the are in the 'pee green' building on the left.

Good luck
The brand is Lil' Devils...FYI, they do NOT sell to the public. I am a BBQ caterer so I am able to buy them. If you are not a business person, maybe you have a friend that is and can get them under his name. They accept cash, CC and can set up an account (on approved credit). Their borchure says: The pellets are 100% natural hardwood blends with absoulutley no additives. It also says: The natrual wood is densified giving more heat and flavor for it's volume.

I saw your picture of your FE100 on the Smoke Ring. The picture looks like it was taken in your shop. Are you running a commercial kitchen out of a shop outside of your house. I heard that this is legal in Washington State but have not had time to get over to the Health Department here in town. I would like to do the same. I plan on going over to Columbia City sometime this week and get some pellets. I spoke with Jim Minion and he says they are a pretty good pellet.

Dan
Not at all!!! I just have it in there for my "personal" use. Then when I need/want to use it for my catering, I will take it with me to the job site. Might as well use it while I have it at home too don't ya think?? Also this way I get LOTS of practice in.. Wink
My kids and neighbors love it when I do that...Gee, I wonder why??
My garage is NOT an approved kitchen facility....Wish it was, but not. Frowner
