All the info here on temperature probes is great. Went out and bought a Taylor probe at Target yesterday. I tried to feed it through the vent hole and was unsuccessful. Do I need to bend the probe end to straighten the curve some? I didn't want to force it through the vent and the plug end didn't fit either. I'm sure there is a simple solution but since this is just my second time using my Smokette I didn't want to mess up the new probe or get it stuck so I just ran the wire through the door near the bottom to avoid too many kinks.

Thanks for a great and really informative forum.

I have a Taylor also. It's a tight fit, but you can get it through the vent. I did what woodburner & mainelydave did - straight down until it catches, then grab it from inside the smokette, and push and pull it the rest of the way through. Works fine, and after a few times it goes through easier.

Smiked a 5 lb salmon fillet & a prime rib this weekend. mmmm mmmm good...

Like BBQfan said - feed the monitor end up through the vent hole. It's much easier and safer than bending your probe. I always place a piece of plastic wrap or aluminum foil around the end before poking it through. This save it from getting any grease/oil/gunk on the part that inserts into the unit. Wouldn't want to get that stuff into the inner workings of the unit.
Have two Pyrex single lead units and one Maverick
dual lead remote unit, all required slightly unbending the probe end in order to fit down the vent on a 50. The monitor ends, for the Pyrex and the Maverick, because of the 90* plug would not come close to passing through the vent.

Sure do like the Maverick dual lead remote, got mine from:

for $59.95 Model-MAVET-7.
So far no problems.
The Taylor probe has a 90 degree connector that won't fit through the vent. Once you get the probe in the cooker, it's no problem to place the temp probe in the meat, just slide the rack halfway out, insert the probe where you want, slide it back in. Haven't had a problem yet!(knock on wood)

got a corned beef smoking today...
