I am looking at geting a new smoker. I was considering the smokette because of its small size. Will the 500 watt heating element be enough with cold outside temps. I live in Iowa and would like to be able to use it when its cold outside. At least down to 20deg F. Or will I need to get the larger model with the 1200 watt element?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum Doc! Don't let the little size fool you. The Smokette is built like a tank and can withstand brutal outside temps. We have users from Maine, Minn, Alaska and every northern state in between. NO Problem. My "worst weather" smoke has been 14 degrees with 20 MPH winds with absolutely no effect on the temp or time.

Others here will chime in with testimonials. CookShack is a keeper and well worth the money!

God bless!!!
Hi carpDr. I too live in Iowa and have cooked in temps from 100 clear down to -20 and it all comes out the same. Gooooood! These smokers are too well insulated to have the outside temps affect the cook. I live 40 miles west of Iowa City and have a 008. If you would like to see one... taste the food from one.. let me know. I would be happy to show you my smoker!!

I'll just 2nd what everyone else has said - Weather has no effect whatsoever. I have 2 008 units - 1 at a house in the Chicago area (cold winters, hot summers, and sometimes, very windy) and the other is at a house in Florida (mild winters, very hot summers, and sometimes, very, very windy). Both reside outside protected only by the Cookshack cover. I've smoked with them in all sorts of weather ranging from sub-zero to 100F+. No problems at all.

BTW - The Cookshack cover is a "must have" option.
On my first cook the outside temps went down to -5 F and my SMokette didn't have any problems with the temp. This only thing that I've noticed in cold weather is a grey spot on the food below the top vent. I've solved that by putting a metal colandar over the vent. It lets the smoke out but keeps the air right around the vent warmer and I don't get the gray spot any more.
