Well,johnapu

I suppose I'm as various as anyone.

We have a pretty active group here in FL.

I'd say you could contact most of them and they'd be thrilled to show you one and brag on it.

Smokin' Tex used to be made by Cookshack and marketed by some folks in Nashville.

I've never actually seen one of these new Chinese models or spoken to anyone that has one.

They found some Chinese labor and decided to sell a product that they could get made cheap.

I guess if you browse around, you'll have trouble finding anybody to say much about them.

I'd try to ask them some hard questions and see how
your support appears.

Follow this forum and try to find a problem that the company doesn't fix-no matter the time.

As far as thermometers go,I'm no tech person.

To me they all are made by the same folks, work the same, have interchangable parts.
I have four different brands.

I guess if you need to be out in your fishin' boat, the guys here can tell ya which ones read how far.

I'd buy the cheap ones, but an off/on switch is nice to save batteries.

But then,I'm just a cook.
I considered a SmokinTex when I purchased my cookshack. I actually called Cookshack & asked them to tell me why I should buy there smoker & not the SmokinTex. The gal I talked to explained that the SmokinTex is a copy of the Cookshack, made overseas, & made with lower quality materials (thinner metal, etc.). I also agree with previous posts, the customer service at cookshack is tops. Stick with made in the USA. You won't regret it!
the day after I ordered my smokette, my wife was telling me how great this smoker was she saw on good morning america and wanted to know if that was the one I ordered, I told her no, and began to question my order placement, after searching several web sites and cook books, no one mentioned the smokin tex, they all mentioned the cs brand, to me that said something about business ethics. Its been two weeks since I ordered my cs oven and I could not be happier with the results, I have called customer service a time or two with what I consider to me trivial questions, and received what I condsider to be good answers. I am glad I made the choice I did.
As far as probes go, get a dual probe Remote Check by Maverick in NJ. I picked one up over a year ago, nice to be able to check meat temp and oven temp at the same time. Had a problem with one of the probes, called the company to order another one and they sent it no charge. Even out of warranty!!! Good customer service. The remote is great too.
