Anybody out there that has gone from a stick burner to a pellet pooper? I'm wondering about the cost difference from wood to the pellets. Will I be spending more on pellets vs. wood? At present time I'm going through about $200.00 a month on sticks. That's approx. 3 truck loads a month. To cook a case of butts I'm using approx. 30-40 sticks.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. The reason for the name pellet pooper is that the man that built my cooker that's what he calls them. However when asked how many CONTESTS his cooker has WON as GRAND he has NOTHING to say. He's tells that if there were a better mouse trap out there he'd build it. In closing I've been watching FAST EDDY'S WINNING all over the country. In fact I was surprised when cooking at the Dillard Festival this year when I talked to Kevin from HOME BBQ and he RETIRED his LANG cooker which is a brother to mine and was using FEC 100's. He took RESERVE GRAND at Dillard. WOW. Said he loves his pellet pooper and even gets to SLEEP instead of BABYSITTING all night.

Steven,

Funny you bring up Kevin. I was going to refer you over to him until I saw the rest of your message.

On fuel costs, you should be able to cook for less money. My FEC uses just less than a pound of pellets per hour cooking at 240*. And I get my 40lb. bags of pellets for around $15-17 per bag when ordered a pallet at a time. A pallet is 50 40lb. bags of pellets from Fast Eddy. There are enough other pelletheads here in FL that we just share the purchase of a pallet when we need pellets.

So for a 15 hour cook, you are talking about $6 in fuel costs. I will let you compare that against your stick costs.
Just want to say that I'm very happy with the quality and construction of my smoker. I love the way my food turns out. It works very well just not to keep up with the volume of a restaurant. At the present time I ran out of pork again tonight. I will be up all night smoking just to have enough to get me through til Sat. I HOPE. No sleep again tonight.

Ribdog,
I'm going through approx. 50-60lbs. a day in a 9 hour day. That's lunch and supper hours. A 60lb. case weight I'm only netting about 30-35lbs. Which means I have to do several all night cooks with my stick burner. I don't function very well with only a couple hours sleep the days that I have to do the ALL NIGHTERS to keep up with the DEMAND.

I have had my FEC100 for over three years. I do catering and competition cooking. I also have a FEC500. These units work all the time. I put meat on at night and go to sleep. I get up in the morning and finish what I have to do. My pits have never let me down. Plus, you can bump up the temperature and cook ribs, chicken and butts a lot faster without loosing any taste or quality. One hell of a satisfied owner.
