This is posted every couple years,so I thought new folks might benefit from it.

Many of us recommend to go to the box stores, for your first therm.

Cheap, dependable, and you can always buy the exotics later,if you wish.

Here is a post from Juggy,a comp cook,on Ray Basso's forum.

Yo to all, I know I do a lot of whining and complaining on this forum, so this post might be out of character for me......

I have two Taylor digital thermometers that were two years old, I believe they are the #1850 models, now referred to as the #1840 model. Both of the probes went bad. I called their consumer hot-line and asked about purchasing new probes. They informed me that the probes had a ten year warranty and they would replace them for free, with no shipping charges. Five days later, the UPS delivered them to my door.

During my conversation with the company representative, I was also informed that if I needed additional probes, they would cost me only $5.oo, shipping included. Not a bad deal!

It sure is nice to see a company stand behind their product.

Lager,

I will second the Taylor. I've had nothing but probe problems with the Maverick, and the simple Taylor has lasted over 2 years.

I got an Acu-Rite on Woot.com for $13 recently and that seems like a good unit as well.

A Thermapen would be nice but I like the probe so the door doesn't have to be opened.

I don't use the remote units. It's not that difficult to do a visual check.
