Just got a FEC100 to replace my SM150. The FEC will be under my roof eves which are exposed wood. I have been reading about some people getting fires in the FECs for one reason or another, not cleaning etc. Has anyone thought of some type of thermal melting fusible link that holds the vent open and would melt/break and close the vent off if say the temp in the vent went over 450*? This in turn would suffocate and extinguish the fire.
Thank Brad

Here's the thing. The ONLY reason you have a fire is that grease and fire mix. If you keep it clean and level, you won't have a fire.

There are 100's of owners who never had one, but you certainly don't see those reports.

IS it a concern? Possibly. If you're worried, then look for a solution like you are.

Interesting idea. haven't seen that mentioned before.
You might consider buying a Maverick ET-732 probe, you can then set a high and low end alarm. I would think you could catch the fire, if any, before it would do any harm to the smoker.

With that said, my biggest concern is getting a battery and an inverter. The storms that we get around here, causes lost of power at times. That's the only sleep lost I get, heck my 020 would just start cooking at set temp after power lost, but not the FEC...oh well!
Cal, a UPS, uninterrupted power supply, people use for computers during a power outage could be used to run the smoker during a power outage. I can run my computer and monitor for over an hour in a larger APS. Just size it for how long the smoker would need to run on the power supply. The igniter is the only high amp circuit and it only runs during start up.
