I opened up the heart of my FEC100 today for the first time. I've had it about 4 months now but I thought I'd open it up and see what it's all about and oil the auger and fan ahead of time since I was planning on going to a competition soon. I'm glad I did.

The wires to the fan had melted through, there was about 1/2 inch of exposed copper on both leads to the fan. They were touching the metal housing of the fire box. Poor design here in my opinion. I'll be making a heat shield to keep the wires away from the fire box. It could have shorted out and started a fire, burning down my garage and smoker with it!

Looks like the fan can be had from just about any electronics store. I'll consult with cookshack on that but it won't hurt to have a spare too.

I'd recommend everyone take a look at the wiring in there smokers.

Guess I won't be smoking today after all.
