I set my smokette for 100 degrees yet it heats up to 135 degrees. If I set it for lower than 100 it still get hotter.
However, if I set it for 175 it is in the 175-185 range.

I get the same thing in my Model 50. In fact when the thermostat is turned off but the unit is plugged in, the element gets hot enough to burn you.

The short answer is yes, this is normal. This is something that you will see in most electric ovens.
You will find that the unit's ability to maintain accurate temperature degrades significantly below about 140 - 150 degrees F. It won't maintain temperature nearly as well as it does above that level.
Lonster, it's not normal for a cookshack to draw current while it's set to off.

I agree, Off means OFF. Search the forums you'll see a few post from others that have brought up this issue. I would call CS right away..
I had the "off didn't mean off" problem with my Smokette. Jerry at Cookshack fixed me up with a new thermostat. It was easy enough to install, altho next time I'd wear gloves to handle the fiberglass insulation.
When I first got Smokette, I had a mind-boggling temp problem. I'd set the temp, and return to check on it and it would be OFF! This happened quite a few times and we blamed it on everything from my glasses to Raoul, our resident poltergeist. Finally one day I had a load of fish in there so I set up a lawn chair and a half-rack in ice right next to her and waited and watched. Didn't do it and it hasn't since. One of those "we'll never know" things.
