I just acquired a Cookshack model #10. I’m told that this unit preceded the SM009. While the box is in great shape, all of the electrics are gone, as is the wood box, if it had one. The current heating element is a Brinkman 1500watt (by measurement it’s pulling about 1400watts), and the wood box is a 9” round cake pan that sits on the element. I’m not concerned about restoring it to original, but I would like it to operate as original. Here’s a picture of the inside bottom. You can see at the back of the u-shaped bracket, 2 holes for the element to exit the box.

I called Cookshack. They have the 500 watt heating element for it. Bill believes it never had a wood box. He was looking at a picture of it, and said it appeared that a chunk of wood was just placed on the heating element.

I’m also attaching a picture that shows a shield/roof of some sort that came with it.

While it doesn’t have a pointy top like current wood box “roof,” it looks like it may have once covered a wood box. It is the right width to cover and shield the element area to prevent grease from landing on the element, but because of the back part of the bracket sticking out, (arrow in above picture), the “roof” in the pictured position can’t slide back far enough to close the door. Can anybody confirm whether this had a wood box, or how this “roof” was used?

Below is a picture of a device on the outside back of the unit.

Bill believes this was the thermostat, but it only reacted to the temp of the back wall. Does anybody know if this had a control of some kind on the top of the box? It sounded like Cookshack has nothing available for controlling the element.

I have a PID controller I use with my other smokers, so I’ll use that to control the temp in this box. It’s a cheap Chinese knockoff, but for less than $40, I’m not complaining! It’s done a stunning job on my other smokers. I’m looking forward to finally having an insulated box so smoking when it’s 5° out will be the same as smoking when it’s 70° out.

Any info about this unit that anybody has would be appreciated. Any surplus parts (free or cheap) for this unit would be appreciated.

Thanks
Blair

Blair,
The model 10 had several differant set ups. The one you have looks like the last model maufactured which would have had a narrow electric panel on back with a lighted rocker switch. The thermostat had a shaft that went up through the top with a Hi/Med/Low label. The light on the switch would come on when the element was active.Thats the best I can tell without more pics.Shoot me an email or give me a call hear at Cookshack and I can get you some more info. My email is t_marlar@cookshack.com
