I'm in the market for a new smoker and have a question. I've cooked on a Big Green Egg for the past five years but I'm moving and I'm thinking that an electric smoker is the way to go. I can probably sell my egg for close to what a SM025 would cost. Finally to my question. I know you can't use a Cookshack in the rain on an uncover deck but could I store it on an uncovered deck if a purchase the cover with the smoker? Thanks in advance for your answers. GrillMan

You can store your smoker on an uncovered deck with the cover. The covers are well made and waterproof.

I also believe you can smoke in the rain. Place a plumbing elbow over the smoker's hole so the rain can't get into the smoker yet allow the smoke to evacuate, and you should be able to smoke while it's raining.

Grillman,

When I smoke in the rain with my cs020. I like to use a milk crate then put a bigger piece of plywood on top of the crate so it extends past the edges of the smoker. The crate will allow enough hieght that the plywood will not hit the display.

I also cooked this winter in -14* weather with no ill effect.
Cal has the right idea. I tried this for the first time a few weeks ago here in Southern California, when we had a huge rainstorm. Not only did it keep my old '55 chugging along, it kept my remote thermometer dry. I put a large aluminum cookie sheet over the milk crate (upside down of course). The only problem I had was getting at the remote thermometer when it shut down once. If your milk crate is expendable, you might want to consider cutting some holes in the side so you don't have to remove everything. Just in case, I put my remote thermometer base on a piece of crumpled up foil so it sits off the smoker a bit. That's probably unnecessary but I started doing it when I first used the smoker and have gotten into the habit. Initially, I was unsure how hot the outside of smoker would get. It turns out to be a complete non-issue with the insulation.
I have one of the covers over mine but all I use it for is to keep sawdust off in the garage.

Years ago, there was a cooking contest and Smokin' and I were testing some entries, along with other cooks.

I was behind the time curve and had to cook, among other things a dry brined turkey in my Smokette.

We had a tropical storm with 40-50 mph winds, and gusts to 70.

The Smokette was 20 feet from the house and a ziploc over the controls.

I drowned, but the Smokette kept on tickin'.

Go cook something. Big Grin
I would make sure to spend the extra cash and get the stainless steel version. I have a 009 (stainless) that I've had for three years with a cover next to my grill with no overhead covering in Chicago. No problems in the rain or snow i just cover the top with a pizza tray with a brick on top making sure I have cleareance over the smoke hole.
