Occasionally, we have a discussion about the rare times a cookshack has a minor glitch, out of the box, and then operates flawlessly for many years.

I had my old black 008, from about a year after Smokin'Okie got his.

It sat out in the south Fl nightly salt storms,by the beach, under an old loose gasser cover for years.

I overloaded it,hauled it,accidentally dropped it a couple of times, and tried to clean it up annually.

I used it several times a week, even in tropical storms, for years.

Some may remember, about five years ago I wrote a nostalgic post about passing it on to my sons that run cattle operations, up along the Ohio River in the hills of east Ky.

Now they share it and haul it around in working farm trucks over three counties of rough terrain.

They don't own a cover, and maybe because they didn't pay for it,they work it like a "borrowed mule".

Now folks watching the weather may be following the snow and ice storm crossing the country.

Elder son called his mother last night to say Ky would be closed down the next couple days with temps in the teens, around 1/2 inch of black ice and six inches of snow.

The girls loaded up with sides and buns, and baked batches of cookies, while he put a full load of butts in the 008.

He knows the timing on butts,so he is used to starting them at 5AM and coming home after 9PM to take them out and wrap them.

He didn't want to go out in the weather,so he duct taped his old Taylor therm, under the table, where the 008 was setting outside on the patio.

He didn't want the weather to affect it,and knew the smoker could handle the weather.

He was out of rub,so he used CS brisket and Turbinado sugar.

Great choice.

He just called to see if there was any problem,if they lost power from ice on downed power lines, and had to rely on the generator to also power the cooker.

I said go for it.

Well, today there is a load of great pulled pork to enjoy with relatives and friends.

I asked to try and get some pix with the smokette cooking in the ice and snow-we'll see.

This ,for those folks wondering about their decision to purchase,or getting their money's worth.

Now,I'll get out of here, before someone accuses me of makin' a Smokin'Okie post. Wink

Well, my 08 has now celebrated it's 10th birthday and I've got to admit, it did have a problem. After it's 8th year the little plastic feet on the bottom had gotten wore off from too much sliding around on the pavement and they had to be replaced. I phoned CS and talked to a nice man named Tony. He said he'd get four replacements out right away. I started to give him my credit card number and he said, "That won't be necessary."

I said, "What do you mean?"

Tony said, "There'll be no charge".

A couple days later the feet arrived in a nice chshioned envelope.

People can gripe and moan all they want about the quality and problems associated with a CS product but they'll never convince me.
Yessir, perfect would be wonderful, but dang close ain't nuthin' to scoff at. Wink

'bout them Tony stories, operator error Roll Eyescreated a problem on the couple year old unit.

Tony 2 dayed it out,and sat on his watts line for 90 minutes talking the operator into how to find and connect two wires.

Sometimes this operator can't tell a phillips from a ballpene hammer. Eeker
My Dad Purchased an 008 Smokette in 1981 as an anniversary present for my Mom. Needless to say she wasn't thrilled, but the great food it has produced over the last 28 years has turned her around. Has used it regularly and has never had any problems.

He bought me one in 2000 as a House warming Gift. I can't think of anything better!
