Using Sawdust with a Smokette

I just purchased a Smokette. I also have a Luhr Jensen Little Chief smoker. After my first experience (spare ribs)this weekend with the CS I will probably retire the Little Chief. Unfortunately I have about fifty pounds of hickory sawdust on hand. Has anyone attempted to use sawdust with the CS? I was thinking that it could just be put in a pan and used like the wood chunks. Any help would be appreciated.

Qman,

I'm not sure if this is a Cookshack sanctioned technique, but...

I use sawdust sometimes in my 55. I need to in order to get it to generate smoke in the lower temp range.

If anybody knows of a better way of doing this please let me know.

The Smokette wood box has holes in the bottom and the 55 doesn't. I don't have the answer except you could try putting some foil in the bottom.

I put sawdust in the transmission of my Chevette before I sold it.

Someone had said here that they make sort of a packet out of foil, put the sawdust in, fold over the top, and poke a few holes in the top. That'd probably slow down the burning, too. Or you could get one of those little weber iron smoker boxes and put it inside the woodbox.

Thanks to all who replied. I'll give it a try using a couple of sardine cans to hold the sawdust. Even heavy foil would probably melt.

Howdy,Qman.

I have no idea when sawdust may" go south on ya",but the CS uses such a minimal amount of wood that I would suggest checking into some assorted chunks of woods for different cooks.

I use mine right regular and can't keep the wood from gettin' old on me.

The variety is half the fun.
