Let me start off by saying I am not complaining. Please don't advise me to call Cookshack as I know the solution and have repaired the problem.
The only reason for this post is to learn what may have caused the breakdown from others that have experienced this problem and solved it.

What happened is the 8-32 screw with locking nut sheared where the auger motor shaft connects to the auger drive shaft. This happened in the middle of a 8 brisket cook and stopped the cook cold. When I removed the bottom sheet metal cover the hex screw head and locking nut fell out making it pretty easy to diagnose. Thinking I may have a frozen auger, I reached up with a pair of pliers and found the auger free and able to be turned by hand. I have replaced the sheered off screw and everything appears to be normal. The pellets I was burning were Traeger Oak and seemed to be OK except for a bit more dust than normal. Removing the auger, it slide out freely with no hangups.
Any ideas?

You could have called CS and they would have told you the same thing, why it happens.

It breaks on purpose. If there is a pellet that "jams" the auger, the shear pin shears.

While you may have turned it by hand, the auger encountered something that caused it to shear.

If it didn't shear, your motor would have burnt out.
