Yes...mainly for large meats.

Do you use a large steam table pan on the lower shelf ? Just butts and briskets ? Does it help ?
If nothing else, it catches a lot of drippings that would normally go into your pan to clean out. Try putting apple juice in the pan as we'll to make a flavored steam in the cooker.
I have tried a water pan a couple of times; was not a big fan of it.
I tried a technique I saw Butcher BBQ use on TV; used a painter's roller pan for a water pan. The slanted pan works well with the slope in the cooker.
But of course David may have been giving us all a big head fake when he used that pan on TV..... :-)

@Know Bull I wouldn't do that. 
That's what I've always loved about my FECs, never needed one.
I don't think there's much advantage when cooking to doness, BUT if you are a cook that cooks ribs on"time". It will produce a more consistent cook.
