Congrats to Troy Black for the win in Hickory NC cookoff this weekend. Troy has been at this for a little more than a year and took on some pretty stiff competitors. 47 entries were there. Troy is a writer for a magizine. This is where he got the bug for cookoffs covering them for his work. It's nice putting some cash in the pocket!

They had alittle something for everyone . Put it on your calender for next year .
Thanks Eddy. I love my FE!

I'm still upset that my wife and kids weren't there. They have worked so hard, helping me at past competitions and couldn't make this one. I had a hard time getting anyone to go and help me. I finally found one of my daughter's softball teamate's dads that agreed to go with me. He had never been to a BBQ cookoff, but had done some wild game competitions. He was in charge of dishes, cleaning and arranging the garnish. He is hooked now and wants to go with me the rest of the season. He was a lifesaver helping me.

I'm still numb. The whole experience was insane. I've had several top ten callups lately, but winning a GC was not on my mind. We had so much hardware from the awards ceremony, we had to have help getting it all back to our cook site. When the organizer gave me the GC trophy and check, he handed me an engraved metal plate and told me to go in to the furniture mart, where we had the cookoff, where a $2,000 leather recliner was waiting on me. SWEET! Oh yeah, I got to kiss Miss North Carolina!!!

After our first two category top ten callups, I started getting nervous. When we were called for first in pork, I realized that if we got called in brisket, we had a chance. They called us up for the fifth in brisket and it felt like everything was in slow motion. I had no idea that Johnny Trigg had won two categories and placed 2nd in another. He's a threat to win every weekend, but then again, there was about ten other teams at the contest in the same boat. He's very good.

I'll be back up in NC for the Tryon contest. I love NORTH CAROLINA and my FE!
