So, I bought a $70 wireless camera from x10.com and it points at the thermometers. I still need to fab something up so it points at them perfectly as it is designed to mount on a wall. I then have the wireless part into my laptop and using their software, I have it streaming live to my cell phone. Here is a test picture from the camera inside my house in the basement. I just took this snapshot about 4 miles away from my house at my work. There is no temp as the meat probe is not in and it just says low. However, I can ride 100 miles away and know where the temps are on the pork butts and be back in plenty of time.
Obviously this will work great for my setup, but for those that have great smokers that hold temps for a long time, this might be a really good option. I have a grand total of $70 plus my phone into this. Keep in mind this is a cheap camera but I am willing to sacrifice the quality as long as I can see the image. I really have to move my laptop up and close for it to not get fuzzy. For me, I will have the laptop about 8 feet away, right on the other side of the door where my smoker is. Any farther away, it gets some static but you can change the channel of the router or the camera to eliminate some interference. It definitely is not perfect, but now I can start the pork butt at 6am, go ride all day and come back at night and be close to finishing it off and never have to worry about where it is temp wise. Thought I would share.
