Doesn't seem fair to give some people traditional offset pits and others a cinder-block pit--and have them compete on a point-for-point basis. They need to have a semi-finals.

Part of the process is knowing your pit! It makes for interesting TV, but it's not exactly a real scenario. Puts less weight--if any--on the final trophy.
Just wanted everybody to know how much we appreciate the reactions to The All Star BBQ Showdown. Chris Lilly and I always anticipated that aspects of the series would generate controversy, but what I've always enjoyed about competition barbecue is that whatever the topic, there will be a wide array of opinions! However, one posting I did want to respond to is a comment speculating that our judges were "coached" by the producers. Well, any of you who know these gentlemen know how stubbornly independent they are. In fact, we picked them not just for their vast experience, but also for their bullheadedness about barbecue. Their opinions are their credentials, and they understand that our contest's integrity and credibility relies on the honesty of those opinions. We may not always agree with them, but once they were picked to judge, we knew we needed to leave them completely alone to do their job. Please keep watching, and continue letting us know how we're doing! Thanks...
Thanks for joining John. Make sure to check the post in the FE forum (Fast Eddy and DrBBQ hang out there).

Appreciate you willing to listen. This crowd from the forum is fun and friendly and we'll give you plenty of feedback.

Stay tuned, lots more shows to talk about.

Hear that CS Forum, they're watching, now is your chance to give 'em feedback.

Hey #5...I've dicovered the mustard sauce but I prefer to leave the BBQ out and just call it "mustard sauce" cause it doesn't taste like BBQ sauce at all to me. Darn good stuff though. Same goes for the vinegar suaces. I like them too... sometimes the pungent like Scott's and sometimes the sweet vinegar sauces. I make a very good sweet vinegar sauce that tastes a lot like BoneSuckin.
Okie, I missed last week's show. Caught a glimpse of someone cooking sausage but couldn't stay and watch. I hope they replay it. I need to look for this week's show too.

This is the only show where you can see the personalities of the pros--for better or worse. I like that.

You know what else I'd like to see is the winner help the novice to improve his end result. I always figured if these guys are coming in dead last and the judges are hammering them with comments like, "no flavor", "tastes like pot roast", etc, then how would the stuff I crank out--which I think is fantastic--compare? We all wonder what the difference is between backyard BBQ and competition BBQ. This 60-second segment might be the best info we wannabe's will ever hear.

It's the best thing on TV right now.
Some of those "novices" aren't novices. They announcers make it sound that way, but several of them are very experienced in contests, just in the local area.

The guy in the Pork Butt ALL STAR show has actually won KCBS contests.

And I know more than a couple of teams that have won sausage that very way. Doesn't say it has to be made from scratch. Just a trick of the trade.
I've been watchin' the shows Smokin'

The people at my favorite watering hole think I'm nuts when I make them tune in and turn the juke box down.

My favorite part of the show is when they unveil the meat to be Que'd. Like when they pulled the tarp off the pork loins. The one amature team could restrain their excitement. It must have been their best cut of meat. Then when they showed the sausage.......there was everything from a half grunt/ half giggle to a mystified
mmmmmph.

The show really gives me something to look forward to on the weekends.

Smokin', Maybe I can clear something up...as far as those non-All Star teams that cook in the middle tent, we try to distinguish the difference between them and the All Stars this way: The "civilian teams" are 'Q'rs that might own a restaurant, compete on the circuit, cater, or simply be backyard chefs. What they haven't done is consistently scored Firsts of GCs. Plus, the 'civilians' (we try not to call them anything but that) have to be comfortable on camera...So you see, a whole range of cookers can qualify! And if we receive a second season order, will be posting to have people apply...thanks.
I think it is a great show, I have it on Tivo and watch it religously when Direct TV can get the schedule worked out right.

I also think that it is a great scenario when they dont know what they are cooking and they dont know what they are cooking on!!! I LOVE IT! All contests should be run that way (I know its impractical to do so, so dont get all huffy on me :-) ). I think it levels the playing field quite a bit. I sure would like the chance to go up against some of these guys...although I beleive my backside would get royally kicked...

I also like watching the judging! That is a great idea! Most judging is done in silence (unless the bbq is so bad that someone barfs) so it is good to see what the criteria that these folks DO use when judging.

Also Chris Lilly is doing a great job as host and commentator on this. His co-host is doing a great job too although her name I cant recall (but I sure remember her looks and personality).

I had some friends from New York stay with us, and I introduced them to my bbq and we watched the show. Their whole family is hooked on it (my brisket AND the show)!

Great show, OLN I hope picks it up again next season and I cant wait to see the next episode!

Thanks John for coming up with a BBQ competition show that finally spectators can watch. Thats been a problem with competitions so far. You go to them and there is little a spectator can do...

Great Show!!!

To everyone who's watched and enjoyed The BBQ Showdown: thanks so much for your comments. It's the feedback we get that will help us refine the series and bring you an even better show for Season #2. I encourage those of you who'd like to see more episodes to go to olntv.com and click on "feedback." There you can send the executives who'll be deciding our fate any messages about seeing more BBQ! We've got two more original episodes still to come, and I promise that if you liked what came before.... Stay tuned!
