I just joined the forum a few minutes ago but since finding this place 2 weeks ago during my search for a new smoker I've been doing a lot of reading trying to soak up some of the knowledge here. I've decided to purchase an Amerique but I just have a question regarding the electronic controls. I was looking at the Amerique on the "Charcoal Store" website and see they have 2 different ones listed. One has a smaller black colored electronic control on top and the other has a control panel which runs the entire length of the smoker. The one with the black colored control has a higher price. Is one of these an "older" model and do the capabilities of the control differ ?? Also, the unit with the black color control appears to have only one hole for the sensor wire while the other appears to have 2 holes. Thanks for any help you could give me.

I noticed the same thing that L.I.H. saw on the Charcoal Store site. I tried to call them to ask about the differences, but I was too late today (they close at 04:30).

I guess I will call the CookShack customer service folks tomorrow to confirm that one is a newer model, and to find out what changes were made.

I'm leaning toward buying the less expensive one, unless the changes are significant. Smiler
I don't have one, but from all my reading,I think, the biggest thing is the old ones display would faid if left in sunlight permanently.

I think the dinosar AmQ had a 750 watt element like my cs020, they changed that fast, so the recovery time is EXCELLENT. Just what I've heard though.

Could be other changes, but you have it right call Cookshack 1st, heck they may have a used one from the backyard class that they would sale? Most of them cook on an AmQ, I think!

Glad to hear that you like to research, but just remember, to RELAX and have FUN! That KISS method works best, just don't ask how I know this.
I called CookShack and spoke to Karen. I went over all the questions that I had about the Amerique with her.

Yes, the control panel is metal, mild steel painted black. The change to the new panel type was made in March of this year. I didn't ask what sort of finish, but a powder coat sounds like a good guess. I think it'll be fine if kept covered.

I went ahead and ordered one (an Amerique), along with a cold smoking baffle and the new cover that is being made to fit the contour of the new control panel. The cover won't be available until mid-June, but I'll keep it covered with a tarp until the cover arrives.
I have had my Amerique for 18 months and it gets a weekly workout. If you plan on cooking a lot of ribs I would skip the rib racks as they are two small for anything other than true baby backs.

I would highly recommend this: www.charcoalstore.com/products...k-PM029/CH-6587.html

Side Rails that allow you to get six shelves instead of four into the Amerique. With two racks of St. Louis Spares per shelf I can now fit twelve racks of ribs in the Amerique!

You will also be happy with the cover. Cookshack covers are heavy duty and well worth the money.

Thanks for that tip, Bacchus2b.

CS used to have the 6 slot side racks on thesite somewhere; may have gotten displaced with the recent changes in models. Just call the office and they can probaly set you up. Really they should be standard.

Call CS and let them know. I'd "bet" the reason they aren't is costs. They work hard to keep the costs down and if every unit going out the door has more racks and stainless side panels, it drives up the per unit costs.

It's always been an option on the FEC's for that reason. There it's a 7 rack system and not everyone needs 6 or 7 racks.

But give them a call, you might convince them, they never listed to me Wink
I'm not talking extra shelves, just that the side racks as currently made should have the 6 or 7 slots (approx 2.5" O.C.) for moving the shelves around. It cannot cost that much more to add a few more slots and not change the material. Every residential oven available has fixed slots to allow moving the shelves around and they don't have options for changing the side racks.
