I have one of the first Amerique smokers and have had many problems with it almost since day one. I have contacted Cookshack around 8 or 9 times regarding my issues with this unit. The same problem exists even today. I keep the unit outside in a covered area with the cookshack cover on. The problems comes after it sits for a few weeks, i plug it in and it blows the breaker after about 10 seconds, i am not using a gfi breaker. I have talked to Bill in customer service many times and he has sent me a new 1000 watt heating unit and that didn't fix the issue so he later sent me a rebuilt controller and that solved the issue for a while. Now i have this same problem of blowing the breaker again. I took the back off of the unit again and there was rust on the transformer on the control board. I am at the end of my rope trying to keep this unit running. It appears that moisture is causing this issue as others have had this problem. This should not be happening with a smoker in this price range. They should be sealed to prevent moisture issues with the electronics.
I am going to call Cookshack again tomorrow to see if they can make some kind of adjustment so i can get rid of this headache.
I had the smaller Cookshack unit for years and it worked perfectly.

Given your location in the northwest, I'm guessing that moisture is being trapped inside the unit, which may be affecting the heat elements and the internal rust you describe. The kevlar style cover is (I believe) water resistant, not water repellant. That plus the fact you're using a non GFI outlet may be the source of your troubles.

My suggestion would be to move the AQ to another location (garage maybe) leave the cover off and allow it to dry with the door open. Plug it into a GFI and see what happens.

The fact that Bill has replaced the control board and element lead me to believe this is a mositure issue. Discuss with Bill and let us know how it goes.
I have tried the unit on a gfi circuit and also on a regular circuit and they both trip the breaker. Have also installed a new breaker and it still trips.
I have had the cover off for days and the door open also.
Thanks to all for your suggestions, will keep you posted on what cookshack says.

I have had quality issues with my unit, Controller shorting out 2 times , no insulation in the unit from the start , heater problems. Have been working with the great people in tech support for quite a while. Finally they said that i just probably got a lemon and they will ship me a new unit.
Outstanding commitment to their customers.
The element Cookshack uses is no different from the one used in an electric oven.
I'd look at if there is stress being put on the leads. Leading to the transition area from the leads to the metal casing cracking.
Moisture in the heater is the issue.
With moisture in the heater when the unit is powered up the control head puts out 100% of power. If you were able to throttle the input voltage down to about >30% for 15 minutes most likely your problems would disappear. In my industry we use the same heaters (albeit 240v) and the temperature controllers have a built in feature that does exactly that. 24% of power for 15 minutes or 200 degrees whichever comes first.
Can't ask for better news than that. CS is really a first rate company when it comes to customer service. Other companies should be this good.
