Does anyone know if the fan runs all the time at the same speed? or does the controller idle it down when it hits temp then speeds it up when it needs more heat? I cooked a brisket last nite and ran into the same prob Candy did. I noticed my digital was showing a big drop in temp and smoke pouring out, seems the fan wasnt turning and had the floor of the fec covered in pellets. I took the side cover off and the fan wasnt turning, tapped it and it started up again. was putting ribs on this morning and had to tap start it again. Good thing this wasnt at a comp lol

I had the same problem. The fan itself has a solid state circuit inside that inverts and controls the fan voltage. When mine went, it felt like it needed a push start so maybe they got a bad batch. Cookshack sent me a new one free but the fan they sent me had the same type connector as the old one but by a different manufacture and the plugs wouldn't match. I ended up cutting the old fan plug off and splicing it to the new fan.
Also, be aware that Radio Shack carries a computer cooling fan for $20.00 that will replace the stick fan. Since it has a metal frame, you will have to hacksaw off four tabs to get to the mounting screws. I now keep that handy for a backup.
Thanks for the reply Larry. I still dont know if the fan slows down or stops then stats again while running. I think when the smoker gets up to temp it slows way down, then when temp falls it kicks back on. It must have stopped during the brisket cook or had a flameout and dumped pellets on the embers that were left in the pot. Think i need to call cs tommorow
