The wood actually burns better if placed up front where the heating element bends. More element/sq inch equals more heat. It's also where we suggest owner's lift the element until it just touches the wood box to help the wood burn if needed. I also place the wood (don't place them on top of each other), so the edge of the wood just covers part of the front holes in the wood box. A lot of times the chunks may be charred, but the portion of wood at the edge of the holes will turn to ash. If I use more pieces of wood, then I just keep partially covering the holes working back.
I like to make sure the wood is placed with the end grain touching the bottom of the box. If the wood falls over, mine will only char, but plenty of smoke flavor.

Now you'll need to experiment with your wood placement. I have discovered on my CS020 that it likes the wood placed in the middle of the box, so that's where I put it.

I don't worry about covering the holes or not, there seems to be enough of them for air flow.
