I live in an area with an active Black Bear population. Has anyone experienced any problems with bears, especially during long overnight cooks and any suggestions on how to prevent problems.

First thought: shoot the bears

Do 2 pork butts. One for you and one for the bear.
Smoker is outside. Wondering if bears would be attracted to food smoking overnight.
Same problem here, just had one break into a house one house away......
I'm not as worried about when cooking as I'm worried about them smelling it when not cooking.

Sounds like an abundance of cheap smoking material, take good notes! Maybe you could write a book on how to properly smoke bear meat.

I'd say that's a given. Best advice I can give is to call the game warden and get his advice.
we have bears that ravage our radio sites in West Texas, the ole electric fence slows em down pretty good, but bears are smart and they think things out they eventually tear the fence down, however if it is in your yard you could keep an eye on it otherwise bear meat is pretty tasty...
Makes good jerky and summer sausage.........

We have bears, fishers, racoons, and skunks in our area and nothing has ever bothered my overnight smokes with my previous smoker. I think critters tend to stay away from heat and smoke.

My buddy in Alaska carries a .454 Casull where ever he goes...
At the Whistler BBQ Contest in Canada, they put up a chain link fence at the finish area of the ski slope at Dusty's, post some guys with flash lights, noise makers and supply them with a pile of rocks and sling shots and a shot of whiskey. Keeps them (black bears) away most of the time.
