I'm no expert,but I travel with a few.

Like the one that Amazon is selling three for $25,or the one the box stores have for under $15.

I check five against my Thermapens when we pack the comp rig.
Invariably,at least one will be off by 10* when we get there.
Over all these yrs, most all the probes are interchangable,as I reckon the chinese prisoners make them all.

Buy the cheap ones, for when you drop one in the boilin' dishwater.Another gets backed over by the truck, the guy at the next cooksite borrows one and it don't come home, you forget and leave one in the other truck, your "grunt" soaks one in the dishpan.

If you don't get too attached, you can always pull into the box store on your way into town. They'll have one that will get within 5* and that is all ya really care about. If it don't work, you can use the probe to check for tender,if you forgot your two tined meat fork.

See,told ya I weren't no expert on them hitech things. Big Grin

That said,I bought one of them Mavericks about 15 yrs ago and its probably in one of the cook kits.I never remember which thing to set first, not to drop the battery into the FL sugar sand, can't read them in the dark, don't remember the fresh battery,etc..

I usually loan it to somebody that can figure it out at the cookoff. Some off the folks seem fond of them.

Like tigerfan says,we keep about half dozen colors of Thermapens around the cook site.
