You don't need to get the oil that hot. You only need it hot enough to "boiling" the water vapors out, so maybe 275 or 300 max. basically you either want to boil the vapors off and if possible replace it with oil down the tube as a better conductor.

Can't say 100% on the plastic. If it's cheap it won't last, but would it matter if it's broken anyway? You're just trying to revive and old one, yes?
I bought a Taylor digi thermometer cuz Amazon sold replacement probes. I bought an extra probe and they've both gone goofy. Come to find out that Amazon doesn't have probes in stock right now...at least not for the Taylor.

Had I known about Thermapens 15 yrs ago, I'd be several hundred bucks richer for all the digiprobes I've tossed in the trash can Frowner

You can get probes for Taylor from the factory for $5.00 shipped free.........
