I am cooking at a friends house and need to transport my FEC 100. Can it be placed on it's back in the bed of the truck or must it remain vertical?

No problem, I lay mine down in a utility trailer all time. One word of caution though. Take the full grease pan out before laying the smoker down on it's back. Don't ask me how I know!

And empty the pellets.
It's find to lay it down, racks, etc may become disloged, but easy to put them back in place.

I don't worry about the pellets in the newer FEcs as they have that clasp on the hopper. On my older FEC 100 I put bungy cords around the lid to keep it on. I learned the hard way on that also!
On the grease pan, just ask Tom. I think he was there.
