I ordered a 009 this afternoon from CS. It should be here just after Christmass (they are on backorder). My question is what brand of thermometer should I get. We live near the water so our house is elevated, underneath the house is where I'll smoke. Will the ET-73 transmit when the receiver and the unit are our of site, or do I have to have it in sight ie a window view. I'd hate to drop $60 on something that won't work??

Wheelz gave pretty good advice,as he has been around here a few years, and been through most of the trinkets..

We all start out wanting to be sure we have the correct tools, to be" great cooks" and utilize this shiney ,new expensive cooker.

Maybe, Wheelz is saying, to learn to use the cooker, and spend less time chasing the" highest tech" thermometer.

I know our cook team owns a couple Mavericks, and Ribdog likes them, and utilizes them.

He buys new batteries, and recalibrates them at each cookoff.

yes,it is necessary.

He has SAVED our cookteam's butt, because the FIRE went out.

We sleep away from the cooker, using fire-so we want to know if it is going.

He is a great reason for our success on the comp circuit.

He is an accountant, besides being a top comp cook, and is smart enough to figure all that stuff out.

He wins state championships in Ribs, and carry's us through to championships in other categorys

I post all this ,because he has a particular use for one product, that none of the rest of us use.

I've had one for over five years and have no idea how it works.

When I retire from cooking,I might figure out how it works,or maybe NOT.

I'll loan it to anyone that walks by,that forgot to get a cheap Taylor for about $15.

My wife/co-cook can figure out how to use one[she is a mathematician], and loans them out to folks that don't remember to stop and buy a cheap Taylor. .

If you walk by me at a cookoff, and would like to trade a brand new $15 Taylor[life time warranty],for my high tech dual probe Maverick for the highest price-we gotta deal.

Just my $0.02
