The KEY is the location of the thermostat whichever rack position you choose.

Try to look and make sure that the metal isn't right next to the thermostat. Seems in some FEC's the physical placement can put the two either touching or right next to each other and it seems to cause some temp sensor problems.

When we've seen this in the forums and moved the rack, the problem went away.

Other than that, the physical position makes no difference, it's more an issue of capacity, that if you put it too high, you can't fit really large cuts on the top shelf (butts specifically).

Doesn't matter for cooking.
