Hey everyone, I was just about to order an FEC when I started reading posts about FEC's catching on fire. If I purchase an FEC, it will be used in my garage for the most part, so this is of some concern to me. I would hope this problem is rare, but I have seen more than a few people here post about FEC fires. I'm curious if these fires are mostly contained in the cooker, or are there actually times where flames shoot out of the cooker. Any input into the extent of possible FEC fires would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pete

I have had my pre-ramp FEC 100 for six years now and my IQ4 FEC 100 for three. Never had a fire in either during any of that time.

Keep in mind that if you cook all night long at a lower temp, take the meat out and then bump the temp up to 350 before you change out the foil in the FEC, you might have a chance at a fire. This is no diffent than any other smoker out there. You need to know your smoker and how to use it properly.

But for those that I have been aware of that have had a fire, I have never known flames to come shooting out the exhaust.
Grease is always the source for these fires.

Having grease left from a previous cook, or cooking alot of food which generates grease. Then turning the heat up for another food.

In the posts were people have talked about the fires. I don't believe I have seen anyone talk about the flames coming out of the unit.

And if your placing your unit in your garage, you will have the vent run out through a wall.

I have had mine first FEC100 for 4 years, and the second for 3 years. Haven't had a fire yet.

The problem with forums is that you'll pick up on the "I had xxx problem" more than you'll notice "wow this is the best smoker made"

The grease fire is caused by grease and fire combining. This usually happens because 1) something blocks the grease drain and it collects ot 2) because it wasn't level.

I had a fire, it was because the smoke was level but became unlevel because of a lot of rain.

If you're really worried about it, put it outside. Mines been there for 5 years, just put it on some concrete Frowner

Any other questions, we'll help.

Like the others, after a half doz years of all the contests, and FL looks like an FEC convention,I actually knew about one grease fire, and it was contained and burned up the door seal.

I run mine touching the house,24/7 and don't even bother to keep a temp alarm in it.I just sleep.

They have had to do so much testing on the IQ4 models,so you can roll them into highrise kitchens,etc-just like an oven.

This is getting to be an urban legend.

I wonder if any of us that ever had a stickburner,or charcoal,or gas steamer, googled fires, how many million hits would there be. Big Grin

I'd bet there are more crockpot fires, altho there are more of them, than FEC fires.
I originally had mine in the garage but was too paranoid to leave it overnight (with the threat of fire.) That was only half the problem though as smoke will be your #1 issue.

I tried venting mine but still ended up with a good amount of smoke just from opening and closing the door (to remove, baste, etc.)

I ended up getting the official cover for it and just roll it outside on my driveway to smoke. When done, I roll it back. Has worked that way for over 2 years now with no problems. The cover lets me leave it out in the rain. Smiler

I also bought a tent that I use for big parties like the 4th. I can smoke under it with not problems. I just don't put the walls up as the tent captures too much smoke.
