What temp was your grill set to?
Wow, that's strange at such a low temp. Are you sure it's not just smoke coming through the auger and out through the hopper?
Pellets in auger were black and burning.
@usj - Sometimes when it has been a little too long since I last swept out my firepot I will have pellets get stuck on the little chute between the discharge and firepot and they will catch on fire at the top of the chute.
Otherwise, I frequently get alot of smoke feeding back through the pellet hopper, but thankfully no fires yet.
One of two things, you either had saw dust build up in the bottom of the pellet hopper or you had the smoke stack facing in a way that allowed a strong wind to blow into it. Usually it's the saw dust build up that has caused this problem for me in the past.
