I've had 4 FEC, for the most part over 5 years. Never lost an ignitor until I lost one in my FEPC.

I think the #1 culprit is that people don't vacuum out the firepot and it it becomes encased in ash, the ash will compact as more heat is applied and eventually choke off the ignitor.
You may be right Okie. I have cooked on my FEC 100 regularly for almost two years now and had never vacuumed out the firepot. Never had any problem until about a month ago & the ignitor went out.

I bought a replacement ignitor locally but have yet to install it...the thing fires up so easily with the gel that I may not.

You can buy the gel at any restaurant supply house...chafer fuel. Just be sure and get the gel and not the liquid with the wick.
I had to disconnect my ignitor because my electrical box has a ground fault that started tripping about half the time. I used the gel for a while, but it gel gets very thick in cold weather (Colorado).
I bought a gallon of denatured alcohol at Home Depot and fill a squirt bottle (like a ketchup or bbq sauce bottle) with it. Works great summer or winter and it's very cheap.
