MY neighbor was up to Lake Michigan last yr. and brought home a bunch of trout and samon. I offerd to smoke some on half's so he brings over this gargage bag with a big fish in it.
Now this poor fish is just in the garbage bag, frozen; with a bunch of ice crystals on him.
I am thinking this fish is way freezer-burned and not worth thawing out. Should I at least thaw it out and see or just pitch it and go over and pop him one for not taking care of his catch?
Any tips would be appreciated Big Grin

Well, this is probably too late (what did you do?, but I would slap him around all-right. I hate to see meat and fish not taken care of properly.

But, ask him if he glazed the fish. Sometimes we sugar glaze whole salmon to get them processed quickly and as fresh as possible.

But if there are those nasty dry spots on it, toss it, boil it for the cat, or just give it to the dog frozen. Or. use it for spring bear bait! Smiler
I haven't done anything yet Andi. I will get the courage to take it out and inspect in more closely in a couple of days.
I too hate to see anything wasted-but I guess some people don't care.
I don't even have to ask if he glazed it cause I know he doesn't know or care what glazing means. What a waste!
Thanks for the reply Andi-I haven't forgotten to check on the hedge seeds- just haven't had time. Wink
Get with it on the seeds...it's hotter than heck here right now! If today is an indicator of weather to come...I may as well move to Oklahoma! Well, not. But today was just too dang hot. Nothing got done, and my tomatoes could almost be seen growing! Basil shot up like rockets today.

Dude! You are only prolonging the aging of that fish-flesh. Take care of it! That fish died for our ...oh, never mind that drivel. Do this. Thaw that pup under cold running water. Press the flesh rather hard. But not like a damn He-Man. I always freeze my fish before smoking. Firms it up and keeps it moist, believe it or not. Anyway, if your finger goes thru the flesh, say bye-bye. Otherwise, at least get it salted! You can hold it for years by salting! And still refresh to smoke! The beauty of it all...sigh. Red Face
Will get on it in the morning Andi. Will let you know what happens.

What the heck you doin up so late? I just got home from work-Noon=Midnight. Enjoying a Bush Light and checking out my newest favorite site.
Rained all darn day here and now the wind is blowing 35 mph. Glad I worked all day. Wink
Okay, Dude! It's 9A here so it must be dang near High Noon in Iowa! (How did a Salmon get to Iowa?) Are ya salting? Smoking? Feeding the birds?

I wasn't up late, time diff, you know. Besides, it's still sunny at 11P here! My spouse brought me home some Red Snapper that was so fresh it was practically wiggling! Had a fabulous midnight snack. I am gonna smoke some today. Little brining, just to test the waters with Snapper. Gonna marinate in Roasted Sweet Pepper and Garlic Vinegrette. Then smoke with mesquite. Sounds yummy, huh? Razzer
Andi mentioned feeding Salmon to a dog. I'd check with a vet on this.. Here on the west coast, salmon is/can be bad for dogs.. but have not heard of problems with other fish.. other than bones.

Salmon caught in the inland rivers on way to spawning grounds pick up a fluke (a type of worm) that causes pretty yucky diahreah (sp?). Also, for some reason, Salmon is not very nutritious for dogs.. according to a local vet tech.
