I was thinking of stopping by a local orchard to ask for wood.
If the wood has been down for a year or so, is that enough seasoning?
Do I need to do anything other than cutting the wood into Smokette-sized pieces?

It is hard to say if the wood is dry enough to use now. I say if you cut it up into 2"x2" pieces and you detect any moisture, it needs to dry more. 1 summer on top of my tin-roof shed usually does it for me, then I cut up in the fall. You might want to remove the bark if possible. Some folks dont like the bark smoke, some do, I think it depends on the wood.

I agree, that should be the first step, finding out if they have been sprayed with any poisons.
I kinda agree about the poisons,,,But why can we eat the apples and yet worry about smoke from the sprayed wood?

Right, dormant oil is normally srayed in the winter, but they will also spray in the active growing season sometimes with fungicide/miticide combination.
