It has been a while since I had science in school. Does anyone know if the following generator is sufficent to power the FEC at a contest:

Gasoline Powered Portable Generator, Voltage 120/240, Power Rating 3,500 Watts, Surge Watts 4,800, Current @ 120Vac, 29.6/14.8 Amps, , Fuel Tank 4 Gallons, Run Time @ Half Load 12 Hours.

By my calulations I need Around a 1320 watts. I took 110 volts X 4 amps times 3 for a startup
number and got the 1320. So I think 3,500 should be enough. Am I close?

Any help would be appreciated!

Just bought a 1000 watt Honda, $700 new. Tested it out with the FE100 and it likes it. Has a tank that holds .60 gallon of gas, very small and quiet. I don't know yet how long it will run without running out of gas. Taking it to a contest this weekend at Chinook Winds, we will try it with battery backup and inverter. Will let everyone know results.
li craig,
according to the manual that came with my fec when the ignitor is on it will draw 400 watts. after that the draw is 25 watts for the auger and 25 watts for the fan for a total over 50 watts.
a 3500 watt generator sure will be big enough if the fec is the only thing it is hooked up to.
one thing i would look at though with any generator is does it produce what is called "clean" power? if it says you can run electronics with it in my opinon it would be worth the extra money
hope this helps some

I know that this an older post, but there may be a workaround for those with generators that don't produce "clean" power that can run electronics. Consider hooking up a cheap UPS that does voltage tailoring for your home computer to your generator and running the FEC from that. Not only would it clean up the power, but it would keep the FEC going for awhile if your generator ran out of gas--at least long enough for you to refill and restart.
