Hi kykiller & Welcome to the Forum.

If you do a search on the subject you'll find it has been discussed several times.

The Maverick and Taylor are both good units (if I remember the discussions correctly). I've used a Taylor for 3+ years now and never had a problem. I had a Poulder brand which lasted about 3 months then bit the dust.

The key is to keep moisture from getting to where the wire meets the probe. The Taylor incorporated a piece of pastic at that point. Some have actually added a piece of shrink-wrap tape to reinforce and prevent moisture accumulation.

Anyway, do the search. You'll find many means and reccommendations on which way to go and what brands to use.

Welcome to the world of smokin'. If you like good Q you'll love your ST.

Good luck!!! Big Grin
hi kykiller and welcome from florida.
i have used both the maverick and taylor units. matter of fact i have 6 taylors right now and they work just great and at 17 bucks a pop at target are a good value.
i use mine to monitor refrigerator temps, outlet temp on my fec, meat temps you name it.
like wheelz said just dont get your probe connector end wet and all is fine. while some people have had problems crimping the wire while running the cord thru the door i have honestly never had that problem on either the fec100 or sm150 units
glad that you are in the forum and hope you have a good thanksgiving

Whatever is close and cheap.

An off/on switch is nice,to save batteries.

Look like they are all made by the same group of chinese prisoners.

The wife just went out to super target to pick up four Taylor remotes and some instareads to give to relatives in Ky.

That way, they are there when we visit and have to cook.

The single most important accessory would be the Cookshack forum, archives,Smokin' Okie Barbecue Guide.
There are some good Mavricks and some bad ones.

The first one I had only worked about 30 Ft away, and would go through a set of batteries in about 48 hours.

I got a replacement, and it works at least twice as far, and the batteries now last at least a couple of weeks.

One thought on the rangs, they won't work if there is any kind of metal in the way, such as siding, your smoker, or in my case canned goods.

I had a perfect little shelf to set in on in my kitchen, but I kept losing the signal. Then I realized all my canned goods were between that spot and my smoker.
